State Abortion Law Questions Persist With Justices’ Pill Ruling

A US Supreme Court decision maintaining access to the abortion drug mifepristone complicates a debate on how much say the federal government can have in how states regulate reproductive care, attorneys said.

In a unanimous decision by the court Thursday, Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote that the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act doesn’t force physicians to “perform abortions or provide abortion-related medical treatment over their conscience objections.” Kavanaugh agreed with what he called the Biden administration’s view of the law.
